Join us for the launch of a special issue of the Human Rights Defender on Villawood.

Since 2015 a group of UNSW Law students (including the guest editors of this edition) and the advocacy group, Supporting Asylum Seekers Sydney, have visited Villawood Detention Centre each week. Working with The Refugee Art Project and the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, the students meet with Villawood detainees to offer support, sustenance and friendship.

This edition of the HRD seeks to give voice and visibility to perspectives of asylum seekers which are often excluded and dismissed – through writings and art works, photographs and a graphic novel.  It highlights some of the challenges specific to on-shore processing, using Villawood as the primary exemplar.

Guest speakers include:

Prof Andrea Durbach, Director of the AHRCentre, UNSW Law

Dr Angela Nickerson, Director of the Refugee Trauma and Recovery Program, UNSW Australia

Refugee Art Project and other artists

Light refreshments will be served.
