Tribute to Nelson Mandela held on UNSW Library Lawn

On 14 December 2013, African Women Australia, the AHRCentre, UNSW Law and some generous individuals arranged a gathering to pay tributeto the life of Nelson Mandela on the UNSW Library Lawn. More than 200 people came to commemorate and celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela, including Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Development, Tanya Plibersek MP and UNSW Law Dean David Dixon. Leaders from African and Australian communities reflected on Nelson Mandela's legacy, his life's work and his committment to justice and forgiveness. The speakers included:

  • Juliana Nkrumah, African Women Australia Network 
  • Ray Jackson, co-founder Indigenous Social Justice Association 
  • Karel Solomon, SA expat, jailed during apartheid
  • Moses Chamboko, Secretary General, Zimbabweans United for Democracy
  • Meredith Burgmann, anti-apartheid activist
  • Joanne Fedler, organising committee
