Business and Human Rights: Moving Forward, Looking Back

From 23-24 September 2013 AHRCentre Deputy Director Justine attended a conference at West Virginia University on Business and Human Rights: Moving Forward, Looking Back. The conference examined the United Nations’ recent work on business and human rights issues, an area that has grown substantially in the last ten years and in particular focused on the work of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights and its application of the Guiding Principles for business and human rights. Participants included a wide range of international and locally based US participants, including Michael Addo, current member of the UN Working Group. Justine’s  paper examined ‘the corporate responsibility to respect and the chasm between what a company should do and what it will do’.

Her paper will be published in a book coming out of the conference but she has also canvassed these issues in a new book being launched in December 2014: Human Rights Obligations of Business: Beyond the Corporate Responsibility to Respect (Eds Surya Deva & David Bilchitz, Cambridge, Nov. 2013).
